How to Search Cases by Name
Begin at the public MiCOURT Case Search and accept its terms. Pick the court first when you know it. Then type the narrowest name the system supports. MiCOURT labels its online results informational rather than official court records. That gap matters whenever you need a verified disposition, a full Register of Actions, or a court-certified copy. Get those from the Shiawassee County file.
- Select a Shiawassee County court scope when the court is known, or begin with the statewide search when it is not.
- Enter the required last name or business name. Add a first or middle name only when it will help separate similar results.
- Use the public category, status, or date filters after the initial results show the likely court and case type.
- Record the court, case number, filed date, status, and any next-hearing cue, then contact the court of record for an official file item.
Shiawassee Case Lookup Name Fields
An empty MiCOURT result often traces back to the name-search rules. The Last Name or Business field is required. It needs at least two characters. First and Middle Name stay optional. Birth Year is also optional, but four numeric digits are required if you use it. A combined name entry must still meet the application's minimum character requirement. Wildcards do not work here. Guessing at a shortened spelling will not replace the form the court actually recorded.
| Field | Type | Required | MiCOURT rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last Name or Business | Text | Yes | At least two characters; no wildcard. |
| First Name | Text | No | Use when it helps narrow a common surname. |
| Middle Name | Text | No | Optional refinement field. |
| Birth Year | Numeric | No | Four digits if entered. |
Note: A public case result can leave out protected information even when the matching case itself stays visible.
Shiawassee Case Lookup Court Codes
The right court code narrows a Shiawassee County case lookup before any names get compared. Circuit, District, and Probate files sit with separate clerks, not one shared counter. Choosing a court also hints at what kind of case you will find. One caution applies. The code is a routing cue for the docket search, not proof that every document in that case is open to the public.
| MiCOURT code | Court | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| C35 | 35th Judicial Circuit Court | Circuit civil, felony criminal, and Family Division matters. |
| D66 | 66th District Court | District civil, criminal, civil-infraction, and traffic matters. |
| P78 | Shiawassee County Probate Court | Probate matters kept by the Probate Court staff. |
How to Search by Case Number
A notice, an ROA, or a clerk may hand you the court-assigned number. Case Number Search is the stronger route then. The Case Number field is required. Wildcards are not accepted. Case Year is optional but takes four digits when supplied. Type is optional too, with no more than two characters, and exactly two if used at all. Enter the number as it was given to you. Do not try to expand an unfamiliar type code on your own. MiCOURT documentation shows a field sequence like YYYY / CASE NUMBER / TT when year and type are available. Treat that as an interface pattern. It does not mean Shiawassee County uses one universal serial format for every case. The citation, notice, or clerk's information controls the exact entry.
Shiawassee Case Lookup Number Rules
Think of the two numbers as answering different questions. A case number identifies the court file. The court code tells you which Shiawassee County court keeps it. Bring both when you ask for a record. MiCOURT's documented examples allow a standalone case number. They also allow a number with type, or a year paired with number and type. Whatever comes back, match the result to the court name, category, and filed date. Draw no conclusion before that check. For a District Court Register of Actions request, the county asks for the case number and party field. It also wants the item you request. Circuit files go through the County Clerk's Circuit Court Division. When the number is known but the public result is unclear, those local channels beat repeated broad docket searches every time.
Shiawassee Case Lookup Filters
A basic name or number search comes first. After that, MiCOURT filters help a Shiawassee County case lookup zero in on status, category, and dates. Status choices are Open or Pending, Adjudicated or Disposed, and Closed. The public categories cover Civil, including Domestic and Family. They also cover Criminal, Traffic and Civil Infractions, and Probate. Filed-date and offense-date ranges are optional. They help separate similar entries in a crowded docket.
- Register of Actions
- The chronological case history, often called an ROA, maintained by the court.
- Public status
- A display cue that does not make every document or attachment available.
- Disposition
- An outcome or closure event that should be confirmed in the official record.
What a Case Search Shows
A public Shiawassee County case search can return identifiers and status details. Those details help you locate a court file. MiCOURT's public-display and calendar material describes case identity, case type, status, dates, court information, and hearing events. Those appear when display rules permit them. Read the screen with care. A visible value never replaces the clerk's official ROA. A blank field proves nothing either. The underlying fact may still exist in the file.
| Court and venue | Court name, court code, county, courtroom, and location information when public. |
|---|---|
| Case identity | Case docket ID, year, number, type code, category, subcategory, and case style or entitlement. |
| Status and dates | Case status, public status, filed date, disposition or closed date, and case age where displayed. |
| Events and hearings | Event date and time, action type, courtroom, judge, comments, and public flag when supplied. |
| ROA pointer | Filing or event descriptions, document availability cues, and a path to request a transcript or certified copy. |
Shiawassee Case Lookup Public Fields
Public results can show parties or participant roles, attorneys, prosecutors, officers or agencies, and charge or claim fields. Those fields appear when they are approved for display. The same record family may also carry an offense date, hearing description, document indicator, balance, bond, or judgment information. Shiawassee County searchers should resist reading too much into silence. An empty online field does not mean a balance, bond, or attachment is missing. Some calendar displays list a time, hearing information, location or room, case number, and CTN on separate lines. A daily docket is just a schedule of settings. It does not show that an appearance happened. Nor does it show that a hearing reached a final outcome. Confirm any result through the ROA or the clerk's file.
Shiawassee Case Lookup Calendar Records
MiCOURT Case Search gives Shiawassee County readers a second way to check a case date. Its filters cover hearing date and time, courtroom, judge, action type, category, case type, and public flag. The District Court posts a daily virtual-hearing docket. The Circuit Court posts its own daily docket. Once you know the case number, a calendar is the quick way to confirm the next setting.
Calendars shift, though. Entries get adjourned, continued, canceled, or changed for other reasons. Confidential matters may drop the names and show only a hearing type, courtroom, and time. A thin calendar page is still a real calendar, not a broken case lookup. When a setting matters, confirm it with the court of record.
County vs Statewide Case Search
Shiawassee County runs no separate public case-search database of its own. MiCOURT fills that role statewide. Its C35, D66, and P78 routes let you search each Shiawassee court specifically, which is the smarter move once you know which court holds the file. If the online display does not answer the question, or you need an official record, call the local clerk next.
| Question | Statewide MiCOURT search | Court-scoped search and clerk follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Public case lead across participating courts. | One selected Shiawassee County court and its custodian. |
| Best use | Finding a likely court or comparing public matches. | Checking a known court or requesting an ROA, file, copy, or transcript. |
| Record status | Informational only; bulk downloads are prohibited. | The court of record controls the official file and access decision. |
Shiawassee Case Lookup Result Limits
MiCOURT caps its public results at a page size of 25. It offers no export control for pulling results out. Some criminal-conviction information is limited to cases sentenced within seven years. So an older conviction or an older case may simply not appear. Contact the court directly before treating a thin search display as the complete record. One more quirk: MiCOURT warns that an attempted-felony charge under MCL 750.92 can briefly display the wrong charge level. Cross-check the court and the governing statute when that matters.
Separate ticket route: Michigan’s e-Ticket search is a statewide payable-ticket channel, not the default search for every Shiawassee County case. Local court instructions and the citation control when traffic routes differ.
The Michigan e-Ticket search illustrates a separate state traffic-search channel.
That display supplements, and never replaces, the MiCOURT case search or the clerk-held Shiawassee County court record.
Shiawassee Case Lookup Clerk Fallback
Need an official answer? Ask the Shiawassee County court that holds the file. The Circuit Court Division keeps the C35 files and serves the public at the Circuit Court counter. For records, call 989-743-2262, option 3. The Circuit Court clerk page is the local route to that office. Call ahead about copies, certification, transcripts, accessibility, and current counter procedures.
District Court records work differently. The District Court record-request route sends civil requests to D66civil@shiawassee.net. Criminal requests go to D66ct@shiawassee.net. It asks for a full name, phone, email, mailing address, case number, party field, and the item you want, whether a complete file, a specific document, a transcript, or an ROA. P78 records stay with Probate staff through their local mail or in-person process. MiFILE handles filings only; it is not a public case-search substitute.
For the technical side, the MiCOURT case-search API reference documents the public search and calendar field families in full.
Those fields help locate a file, while the right Shiawassee County clerk supplies the official record response.
Restricted Cases and Access Rules
MiCOURT intentionally excludes adoption, juvenile and child-protective proceedings, juvenile guardianships, mental-illness matters, name changes, PPO and PPO-violation records, wills, and other sensitive categories from ordinary public search. An exclusion is not proof that no case exists. Protected identifiers and confidential attachments can also be withheld from an otherwise public case. Ask the court whether a requested record is public, restricted, sealed, confidential, or available in redacted form.
MCR 8.119 generally makes trial-court records available for inspection and copying unless another authority restricts them. MCR 1.109 protects specified personal identifiers in court filings. For a federal matter, MiCOURT is not the docket source. CourtListener RECAP is a free non-court reference, not the official federal docket keeper or a substitute for certification.
CourtListener RECAP is identified in the research as a non-court legal-record reference.
Federal access sits apart from a Shiawassee County case lookup and from the local court's official file.
